Clubfoot Treatment Available at COS!
The current “state of the art” treatment for clubfoot is called the “Ponseti Treatment” named after one of the founding fathers and legends in pediatric orthopedic surgery, Dr Ignacio Ponseti. The protocol involves a very strict and specific series of manipulations and casts to gradually bring the foot into a permanently corrected position. It is critical that the protocol be followed precisely for the desired correction to be obtained. Improper technique can result in an incomplete correction, recurrence of the deformity or even permanent damage to the foot.Dr Kent Vincent is the only pediatric orthopedic surgeon in Arizona personally trained and recognized as expert in the Ponseti method of clubfoot treatment by Dr Ponseti himself! For more information, please see “Clubfoot” under the COS Education section.

The project was spearheaded by Dr Hank Bratt and represents the future of medicine in the United States. For our patients it means more accurate & detailed notes, safer record keeping, and a greatly improved process for keeping their primary care physicians current on diagnosis and treatment. February 2005 Surgical First for COS!
Dr Kent Vincent performed the first femoral lengthening in Arizona done by ISKD nail technique! The ISKD nail is a very new and cutting edge technology in the field of limb lengthening. The nail fits completely inside of the inner canal of the bone eliminating the bulky and cumbersome external fixator devices most commonly used. The nail has a built in “clutch” which causes it to “self-lengthen” with normal movement of the patient’s extremity. The device not only eliminates the external fixator device but also minimizes scaring, muscle entrapment by the fixator wires, and the need to lengthen the fixator four times per day. In most instances, the ISKD nail is more comfortable and allows for much earlier weight bearing. The operation was very successful. The patient gained almost 2 inches in length and is back to normal activities. We believe the device and special technique will improve the process of limb lengthening for a significant number of our patients! |
