Sever's Disease
Sever's disease (heel pain) typically occurs in the 8-12 year age group. It is a common inflammatory condition located where the tendoachilles (heel cord) inserts on to the calcaneus (heel). Running and jumping sports may aggravate the condition. Sever's disease may affect one or both sides.
It is very similar to Osgood Schlatters disease of the knee, which usually occurs, in slightly older children. It is a self-limited condition that improves spontaneously with growth and development. You can often decrease the symptoms by heel cord stretching, ice and an over the counter anti-imflammatory medication. Your Pediatric Orthopedic Specialist may also prescribe a visco-elastic heel pad for sports.
